Mount Desert

Pearl's farm was in the town of Mt. Desert near the town line between Mt. Desert and Bar Harbor on the North end of Oak Hill Road.

Pearl used a bulldozer (see photo below) to make woods roads way back into the woods where he cut swamp maple for boiling maple syrup. Apparently there were poker games while he waited for the syrup to boil down. My wife and I live on a parcel of land with one of these old roads he made. He wasn't afraid of going right through swamps to get to the hardwood stands. From there he delivered to routes in Seal Harbor and Northeast Harbor. I'm not sure if this was a regular thing, but in the winters around 1945, when many of his customers left MDI, he turned over routes to Clarks Dairy from November - April and took them back when things got busy again in the late spring.
