The Fogg Dairy Farm

Bar Harbor

The Fogg Farm has a long and storied history, I don't know much about the early times. They are in the middle of the Emery District along the Crooked Road. Everett White worked at the farm for Charles Fogg (George's son) from 1957 – 60 in the evenings. They had 25 – 30 cows, I'm not sure how many they milked. The milk was sold bulk in 10 gallon cans, each weighing 110 lbs – very heavy work indeed.

The cows were a mix of Jerseys and Holsteins Before Charles took over, George had a market garden across the road from the barn and house. This market garden was in a low area that was naturally wet and good for a farm back then that couldn't water crops like we do these days.

It is said that the Fogg's had a huge coffee grinder on the farm and ground clam shells for the chickens for a calcium source. Bill Sweet told me the story of going over to the Fogg Farm in a milk truck to pick up something and one of the goats jumped in. Bill didn't notice and was miles down the road before he discovered his hitch hiker. Of course, Bill went back to the farm to return the goat.
